Obesity is taking the world by storm. Well, not just currently taking but has taken and is continuing to take. So, how do we tackle obesity?
I read this lecture note and it was funny reading that among the factors contributing to obesity is food supply. Well, overall there are 7 themes and 108 variables. Thats just an attempt to map factors contributing to obesity.
Anyway, there was a part in the notes that provided an analogy on how to tackle obesity. Imagine obesity as smoking. To promote cessation, we raise the tax. Imagine a loaf of bread costing GBP2. That would definitely stop me eating bread! haha. The next step, GPs provide brief repetitive advice on reducing food intake. Suppliers reduce the portion of food sold. The media then kicks in creating adverts that stigmatises people against obesity. Obese people will be seen as socially unacceptable and then everyone would want to be fit and healthy. The government would ban eating in public places. On food packaging, there would be images of obesity related diseases and wordings such as "OBESITY KILLS". The ultimate step would be to reinstate the Nazis so that any individual without the desired trait would be executed.
Now, thats what I call extreme. But can we manage obesity without some kind of measure taken? We become fat blobs playing console video games. We call it human right to have access to food when we block off supply to Palestine.
It is estimated that if the trend continues, by 2050, 8 out 10 individuals will be obese. Interesting huh? Imagine EPL football matches played at a really slow tempo. Thats if they still exist. Haha.
Anyway, I'ld like to end this post with a quote:
"All diseases have two causes: one pathological, the other political"
Rudolf Virchow 1821-1902
*the quote has been corrected from yesterday, I apologise for the typo*

Absolute truth
Salam
Yang betul tetap betul, yang salah tetap salah. Yang baik tetap baik, yang jahat tetap jahat. Tak perlu baik untuk saling tegur-menegur, tak perlu angkuh untuk terima teguran. Tak perlu bersembunyi di sebalik hipocrity, tak perlu mendabik dada akui keinsafan.
just because you don't like things or you don't agree, don't make right things wrong, or wrong things right. Bite your tongue, shut your mouth and get on with life. Watch what you say when giving opinions about Islam. Open your heart to really accept rather than seeing the whole world as a staged act. Is everyone changing or are you the one who's still as ignorant as ever?
Paradox of our time: we get more knowledge, but less common sense. Knowledge should only bring us closer to the blessed path, insyaAllah.

Random
I live in a world
Where all that matters to me is myself
I love myself before I love anyone else
I am surrounded by my faithfuls
The walls of my room
My obedient laptop
I make do with what I have
The clinibands create a whole gym for me
My speakers are my orchestra
I have expectations in things that never disappoint me
So far, time has never stopped
Nor have my duvet left me cold
I don't crave for other's attention
And I don't have the need to feel I belong
Because I have my faithfuls with me
I give my best in all I do
So that I don't look back in regret
If I don't get it, it's not meant to be
I was given the name Mukhlis
Meaning 'the sincere one'
And I am called by this name
A name is a doa
And alhamdulillah, I feel blessed
I truly want to be sincere
I have friends and they have me
They matter to me as they make me who I am
I cherish them
You are invisible to me
If all you put up is a facade
Of wanting me to notice your presence
I wear a lot of fake things
Because I can't afford originals
But I can never take fake friends
I'm a heartbreaker
And I apologise for my poor craftsmanship
I wasn't taught to be one, and experience is my only teacher
I need time to develop in this world
Physically, emotionally, psychologically, mentally, socially, spiritually
We all do, but some of us act like we're ready
I crap a lot
And its all about myself and my views
Sorry if I wasted your time

Theres a sea out there
Salam
I found Dr Graham Law's lecture today particularly interesting.
"Epidemiology is not at a standstill yet. The body of knowledge is growing and is not definite. We take for granted knowing that high salt intake causes hypertension, when this knowledge was discovered in recent times. Hippocrates didn't know this. In time, people might say 'its obvious that carpets are bad for health! how could they have not known that!'. Thats how epidemiology is today, a neverending sea of knowledge..."
The carpet example was an extreme, but he got his point through. Allah has only opened to us a glimpse of his knowledge, yet we look at the sky and live as if the world is ours. Subhanallah!
ps: insyaAllah, will work hard to ensure that the 16th of June will pass with ease in Allah's grace.

Determination
Salam
If only I can transfer that little bit more determination from The Edge to my studies. Theres no better place to see such determination than there. The grimacing faces, the pouring sweat, the heaved breaths. Would you go that far to maximise your brain usage? Thats what I call determination. Sheer and utter self belief in doing something, where giving up doesn't exist. From 10kg to 20kg in 1+ weeks, I know what it takes to push yourself to limits.
To the limits and beyond.

Medics and summer just don't click
Salam
We whine and moan about having to be inside revising for exams when the weather's beautiful. Well, thats how life is gonna be for us medic right?
You might not even be able to have Eid-ul-Fitri with family apatah lagi enjoying the summer sun. Thats how life is gonna be, so lets just see it through. Maybe if you want plenty of sunshine, you should go back and practice in Malaysia. hahaha. Day in day out its gonna be sick people, sick people and more sick people. HOw would you take that compared to summer sunshine, waterfalls, beaches and travels? Its a clear case but someones gotta give and thats us I guess.
But who said you can't enjoy the sun? You can always revise outside. You can go for a swim and enjoy an ice cream. Lifes not that bad afterall. At least mine is not. =)
p/s: exam is in 3days time. Am i ready? InsyaAllah.

Drive
At last I've found a drive for me study harder.
I know I should be doing things lillahi Taala but this is to add on to that.
I'm gonna work hard and I mean it.
Even if it means drinking coffee on a daily basis
(FYI, I can't really tolerate coffee, I get dizzy and crazy palpitations apart from going to the loo every 15mins)
You know why I'm gonna work hard?

(my half a century mama wif younger sister che ah)
cos I wanna pass my exams, board the plane home so that I can salam and cium and peluk my mama, ayah and siblings. My mama has worked hard enough for almost 22years for me, so if I can't find it in me to work hard for myself, I'll do it for my mama.
Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts!
Do you smeellllllllllhhhh! What the rock...is cooking!
(hahahaha, sj nk kasi naik smgt sket)

Ustaz Latiff
Salam
Dear ustaz, I've no idea where you are now or how you are. I hope you're in the best of health. To be honest, there are not many things I remember about you. But among those I do remember was when you thrusted your palm into Poji's face at the surau after you found his towel on the bus in the garage after you chased after the lot who escaped subuh jemaah prayer. I remembered how shattered he was when you smacked 7 shades of light out of his head. I also remembered after that you were so angry at them that you went outside the surau and smashed your handphone into the ground. You were shaking and trembling from anger. everyone knew you for your hot-headedness and incontrollable anger.
but the other part of you that I remember is this:
"apabila kita melakukan kejahatan, apabila kita melakukan dosa, maka akan bertambah satu titik hitam di hati. lama-lama, gelaplah hati. oleh itu anak-anak, bersihkanlah hati kita. InsyaAllah akan berkuranglah bintik-bintik hitam itu dan terbukalah hati. OK, semua ikot saya baca..."

From that day onwards, I remembered reading this piece of selawat at least once everynight before I go to bed. But I found that as time passed, I forgot all the good things I used to do. I took my memorising capabilities for granted. I hurt people directly or indirectly. I boasted with my abilities and held my head in riak. May Allah forgive me. I weaned away from the selawat, especially since uni started. And now, I'm probably facing the consequences. I'm finding it harder to memorise. Is it normal human physiology? No, I'm only 22 and not even at my peak yet. So there has to be something to it. Among the reason I now realise is that I no longer recite this selawat. Astaghfirullah. Allah has guided me back on track. =)
There was also a story of a famous imam who lost his memory and began fogetting the hadith he remembered. After asking his teacher, he was told the cause would probably be from sinning and was to go back, reflect and seek forgiveness from Allah for the sin. Alhamdulillah, his memory was reinstalled and may ours too, not just reinstalled but strengthened insyaAllah.

Selamat Hari Guru
Hari pertama masuk sekolah
Tak pandai membaca mengira
Tetapi cikgu begitu tabah
Mengajar kami sungguh-sungguh
Bermula ABC sampai Z
Hitung 1 sampai 10
Baru ejaan dan kira-kira
Kami belajar dengan lancar
Berkat kesabaran guru bijaksana
Memberi pelbagai petunjuk
Hari demi hari kami pon mengerti
Pelajaran nilainya tinggi
Kami ingat setiap masa
Jasa guru mendidik bangsa
Sambutlah kini ucapan kami
TERIMA KASIH CIKGU!
[khas utk mama saya, Teacher Aziah yang mengajar saya english masa sekolah rendah dan still lagi mengajar saya erti hidup. Juga kepada ayah and kak wah (lecturers), kak muna and che ah (english teacher and english teacher-to-be), semua cikgu2 yang telah mendidik saya sejak lahir. Tanpa guru, tiadalah saya]

Med school, medicine and doctor
analogies? i love them.
medschool:
you spend the first 3 years learning the days of the week
medicine:
after the 1st 3years, you know the days of the week. you go on rotations in 4th year so that you get to do more cool stuff with the days of the week. eg: list down the days of the week in alphabetical order, identify the day of the week with the fewest letters in them, know them in the correct order, know the 1st day of the week (depends if your in kedah or penang). shout out the answer to the consultant with whatever question s/he comes up with about the days of the week. basically, its abbout trying to link the days of the week you know with the situation that arises.
doctor:
You know the days of the week, you can play around with them. patients come in telling you about the year or month. Its up to you to find which day went wrong in their life. You find that it was a Friday. (ok, sape suro skip smyg jumaat? kidding!)
*mata merah, tekak kering, dok ascend & descend pathways berkali2*
p/s: also dead tired from swimming my arm off

Is that shoe big or what?
Haha, harini reality check telah berlaku.
1. i swam with the uni swim team and damn they were fast! but to my surprise, IM JUST AS FAST! the only difference was that these guys had stamina. and i tell u, REAL STAMINA! i was up to par for 2 laps and then they flew by. cos i was choking. -_-"
2. sat in the steam room with few uni rugby players. and hey ho, THESE GUYS ARE MASSIVE! like giants! not height wise, but breadth! same goes for the swimmers. I might be quite sizable for Malays but internationally, get real.
so there you go, just a thought. at least i know where to head for the next 1.5months before going back to msia. bring it on!
p/s: if exams didnt exist, i would've literally lived in The Edge.

[ok, i'm not THAT tiny]

Stay away
Another of my random thoughts:
"staying up is dangerous. It makes you miss classes the following day"

Ameen.

Just give me some candy
I was perched outside in the pouring rain
Trying to make myself a sail
Then I'll float to you my darlin'
With the evening on my tail
Although not the most honest means of travel
It gets me there nonetheless
I'm a heartless man at worst, babe
And a helpless one at best
Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy, before I go
Oh, darling I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my heart
Oh I'm often false explaining
But to her it plays out all the same
and although I'm left defeated
It get's held against my name
I know you got plenty to offer baby
But I guess I've taken quite enough
Well I'm some stain there on your bedsheet
You're my diamond in the rough
Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
before I go
Oh, darling I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my heart
I know that there´re writings on the wall
But Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
After my heart
Oh I'll be there waiting for you (repeat)
Again
Salam!

Theres somthing BIG in the air
Owh, a 2nd post today
I felt somthing different at LUMSOC's majlis just now. I've never really liked majlis keramaian ni because I think its a place where people put on fake faces and smile and greet each other when moments earlier they were bad-mouthing the same person. Its all up for parade.
But majlis tadi was different. There was real bond. Am i getting sentimental or do i just miss the yasin+tahlil+solat hajat environment? I dunno. Theres this sense of everyone wants to be a part of it. Or was it because of the free food? I dunno, but alhamdulilah, all went well.
there might actually BE something BIG in the air finally..

Khutbah jumaat arini mudah, tp mendalam. Kerap kali kita bangga kita belajar medic, belajar engineering, accounting, law, dentistry, dan seribu satu macam lagi subject dan course. Kepada siapa kita nak bangga? Alhamdulillah, bangga mak bapak. Bagus kita buat mereka rasa macam tu. Tapi untuk diri kita sendiri, jangan sampai timbul rasa riak. jangan sesekali. Sekelip mata tuhan boleh tarik.
Selalu je kita dgr ustaz-ustazah pesan, nikmat ni tuhan boleh tarik sekelip mata. Kita angguk setuju, tanpa ambil pusing sebenar-benarnya. Sbb kita pusing kiri kanan, duit still ada sesak2 pon. kasut still ada. baju still ada nk pakai. makan minum mak bpk or sendiri bley tanggung. so apa yang sekelip matanya?
Maybe aku tak ditarik nikmat dalam sekelip mata, tapi tiada yang lebih menyeksa setakat ni. Kalo semua org rasa dia jalan tak smart, kaki dia kengkang, kaki dia gemuk, dia jalan lembap, ingatlah bahawa aku pernah ditarik nikmat berjalan kaki walau hanya sementara. And trust my word, it was a hell of a difference. Nampak macam simple, xley berjalan je pon. bukannya mati, tak pon tak boleh makan ke. but let me tell you, it was agonising. frustrating. excruciatingly painful at times. and even up till now, 8months post-op, my knee still isn't the same, if it ever will be.
maybe itu balasan tuhan aku pernah riak. Astaghfirullah. Na'uzubillahi min zaalik. kadang-kadang kita buat tanpa sedar. Entahlah, hati kena jaga, lidah ke jaga i guess. kalo x berlagak secara bercakap pon, riak timbul dalam hati bila ternampak org yg lebih inferior. Astaghfirullah.
Anyway, dh deviate plak daripada tujuan asal. Khatib tanya jemaah, "for what reason do you study what u do? Why do you study medicine?"
There is only one answer: Lillahi Taala.
If it is true you do it for Allah, would you do it 'bagai melepaskan batok di tangga?' would you do it cincai2? Tepuk dada, tanya iman. Maybe thats why omputih ni advance maybe sebab diorg dh curi sikit kehebatan individu2 tamadun Islam silam. because for these people, whatever they do, they give their best. Bak kata omputih, whatever you do, give it your best.
Lets all give our best. Lillahi Taala.

I had a thought
Just now I had a thought.
It was about death.
I think, death while giving birth is heartbreaking.
Such irony.
(lepas tgk live - lightning crashes)
