Salam
Obesity is taking the world by storm. Well, not just currently taking but has taken and is continuing to take. So, how do we tackle obesity?
I read this lecture note and it was funny reading that among the factors contributing to obesity is food supply. Well, overall there are 7 themes and 108 variables. Thats just an attempt to map factors contributing to obesity.
Anyway, there was a part in the notes that provided an analogy on how to tackle obesity. Imagine obesity as smoking. To promote cessation, we raise the tax. Imagine a loaf of bread costing GBP2. That would definitely stop me eating bread! haha. The next step, GPs provide brief repetitive advice on reducing food intake. Suppliers reduce the portion of food sold. The media then kicks in creating adverts that stigmatises people against obesity. Obese people will be seen as socially unacceptable and then everyone would want to be fit and healthy. The government would ban eating in public places. On food packaging, there would be images of obesity related diseases and wordings such as "OBESITY KILLS". The ultimate step would be to reinstate the Nazis so that any individual without the desired trait would be executed.
Now, thats what I call extreme. But can we manage obesity without some kind of measure taken? We become fat blobs playing console video games. We call it human right to have access to food when we block off supply to Palestine.
It is estimated that if the trend continues, by 2050, 8 out 10 individuals will be obese. Interesting huh? Imagine EPL football matches played at a really slow tempo. Thats if they still exist. Haha.
Anyway, I'ld like to end this post with a quote:
"All diseases have two causes: one pathological, the other political"
Rudolf Virchow 1821-1902
*the quote has been corrected from yesterday, I apologise for the typo*
