turtles can fly

(click entry title to go to trailer)

it was set in mountanious Iraq

after the war torn state left by Saddam Hussein's regime

this movie is heartbreaking
it pictured the reality when rape is a weapon of war, to excercise power and dominance over a nation. to show that you can humiliate the breeding wombs of a culture, a country, an identity.

The girl was raped by one of Saddam's army. She was somewhat 7-9years old, having to bring up a baby boy, who was cross eyed and most important, one she did not even claim to be her son.

She lived, bringin up the boy with hatred in her heart, the felt of dehumanisation, being humiliated to the lowest floors, having lost her family to the ruthless soldiers who burnt them alive in their houses or shot them point blank, just between the eyebrows, making brain matters splattering all over their mates only to be accompanied by cheers of victory.

Her brother did manage to survive the warfare, but ended up losing both hands to a bombs and explosions. He was gifted in a way, he often had visions of the future, seconds before they happen.

n then came satellite. he was the so callled smartie pants of the village. called so since all he did was trying to lobby the villagers to buy satellite dishes so that they can keep track of the wordly happenings. this kid was cocky in a way, he was the only one who knew how to set up tv kits, and even install a satellite dish. but he was the best. more or less 30kids grew up eating of his hands. he was their brother, their father, their mother. he took care of the 30 or so orphans who lost parents to the cruel war. appalingly, he was able to do that by making them work with him. These kids earned food by picking bombs in mine fields. they disintegrated it and sold it to others. some lost their leg, some lost their life. but it just had to go on. they sheltered in blasted open tanks, drank from muddy streams and ate wut the got.

in this film, it showed the opposite of king arthur. how evil a muslim-based regime can be despite claiming holding on to Islam as the main pillar of administration. when rape is a weapon of war, Islam is no longer the big idea. it was heart breaking to see how deteriorated moral values have become. it was just chaotic n unreal.

if u were poked by someone with a poisonous needle which got swollen so badly and the pain was unbearable, there'll be two things on ur mind. first, u want the swelling to go away. second, u'll definitely wanna pay back the people who did that to you.

This girl, the one who wasa raped, tried for numerous times to kill her illegitimate son (who at that time was probbly 2yrs old). she left him in a mine field, hoping he'll blow up to smithereens and ease her pain, but sattelite came to the rescue, acting all brave and mighty due to his affection for the girl. he saved the child but badly injured his leg when a mine went off during his attempt to save the child. the girl's brother (the one with no hands) repeatedly calmed the girl, telling her killing the child would not help since the child did no wrong. he loved the child like his own baby brother but for the girl, he was a living nightmare.

the tension increased as the village leader bought a satellite dish which allowed them to follow international news. satellite, being the only one who understood english told the villagers that america was to launch a war against saddam. chaos was stirred up, everyone in havoc. the 5-8 year olds geared up with AK 47s, kalashnikov rifles all for the sake of protecting their beloved country.

nearing the end of the movie, the implicit message was sent out. when everyone was geared up for war, 2 american military helicopters came to their village, throwing leaflets as they flew over. translation by satellite unveiled the content of the leaflets, saying the americans where the cure to their sadness, to their suffering, to their pain. Agrin, the girl with the illegitimate child drowned the cross eyed 2year old by anchoring him to the bottom of a lake using stone anchor. she then committed suicide by jumping of a cliff (the very same cliff she climbs in order to find peace). her brother had a vision of the little child drowning, only to be met by a dead infant and a crying satellite, who tried to save the child but just couldnt bare the sight of his dead body. This part of the story actually tried to symbolise how they were freed from their sufferings, with the presence of the US in their homeland. in reality, they only worse suffering was felt by those who were left behind. their american dream shattered as they eventually realised, the americans did not give them the light they sought in the darkness.

by they way, the title was referring to the last thing the drowning infant saw. his pet turtles swimming above his drowning body, only for him to compute as them flying. stating the impossible, turtles can fly.

  1. hello there Mukhlis :)

bangsa 'polis dunia', senantiasa menjual fantasi that only they know the meaning of peace. whereas their definition of peace is when every thing goes their way.

am glad to stumble upon your space. interesting movie indeed. would love to watch it.
